It is interesting how our Legislature works. The hearing was held on the 16th as scheduled. The corporate executives representing the pro-LNG interests testified without any time restrictions and the scores of private citizens who took the day off work to attend the hearing and provide input were turned away. So much for our democratic process!

The Ruby Pipeline is a bad idea for a couple of reasons.

1.) It is slated to run through some of the most remote, roadless areas of the country. Why is this bad? Well, folks still live in these areas, and having lived in the section where the pipeline is supposed to run through northern Nevada, I can guarantee that there would be absolutely no way that first responders (like firefighters) in the area could handle any kind of emergency related to a leak or a fire on the pipeline. I am not saying this would happen, but if it did, there would be relatively little way of controlling the damage.

2.) The pipeline would run directly past or through some of the most beautiful, sensitive, and protected lands in the Western U.S. Right now, the route map has it running past a major Natural Conservation Area, a National Wildlife Refuge, a wilderness study area, a number of tribal lands, and through or past several National Forests. The impact that its construction and maintenance would have on these lands and the amount of legal paperwork necessary to pull all of this off, just seems like it would not be worth the cost.

Martin:

I don't think anyone has taken a position on the Ruby Pipeline. This article just mentioned that it was a potential alternative. Anyone out there have any thoughts?

Why oppose the Ruby Pipeline? It has the lowest greenhouse gas emissions of any of the proposed west coast natural gas delivery projects. Ruby has agreed to use renewable resources to power the compressor stations.

The Ruby Pipeline is the project that should be supported because it is the most environmentally friendly project.
